Isaw are skewered chicken intestines grilled to perfection and are sold everywhere in the archipelago. It’s everybody’s go-to for comfort food. Just a bottle of soft drink from Aling Nena’s sari-sari store and 15 sticks of Isaw should be enough to relieve stress.
2. Manggang Hilaw at Bagoong
We always think of this right before bedtime. They say only pregnant women are interested in manggang hilaw and bagoong but if that’s true, then everyone in the Philippines is pregnant! This perfect combination of raw mango and fermented shrimp paste is enough to make them go gaga over it.
Danggit! Don’t you just look forward to this for the first meal of the day? Or anytime of the day actually. These crispy dried fish are an excellent choice to pair with sinangag (garlic fried rice) and sunny side up egg.
Birthdays, weddings, christenings, graduation dinners or any grand celebration among the Filipinos, Lechon is mandatory. When inviting someone over to their party, 99% of the time their visitors are waiting for them to mention “lechon” at the event. A roasted pig is a must if it’s really something special. Haay, mabuhaaaaaay~
Ahhhhh, the smell of sisig on the sizzling plate is euphoric. Sisig is made from the parts of a pig’s head and its liver. No animal part goes to waste in the Philippines; therefore anything edible is eaten, thus the existence of sisig. This dish is usually paired with smoking hot white rice and of course, a good old bottle of beer.
Balut may be the most controversial Filipino food. Animal rights activists call this animal abuse while Filipinos call this a delicacy. You will literally find and eat a duck embryo in a balut egg. Balut comes with the feathers, the beak, and the feet, but for pinoys, it’s beyond delicious. And they crave for it ALL. THE. TIME.
Halo-Halo is the word for “mixed together” in the Filipino language. This dessert is literally a mixture of everything: shaved ice, ube paste, shredded coconuts, coconut gel, sweetened bananas, beans, ice cream, leche flan, corn flakes and evaporated milk. Yum!
Kwek-kweks are the most magical boiled eggs and these eggs or boiled quail eggs are dipped in orange batter and deep fried until the batter is crispy. Everyone who loves eggs, definitely love munching on these orange balls. They are best eaten with spiced vinegar or sweet gravy.
9. Pancit Palabok
Pancit Palabok is a noodle dish with shrimp sauce. It comes with a few sliced boiled eggs over it and a few ingredients on top for garnish. This is a classic merienda (a Filipino term derived from Spanish for snacks). It has even made its way to the menu of the famous Filipino fast food chain, Jollibee.
10. Banana Que
There’s not really a proper way to categorize Banana Que. It’s a merienda, a dessert, something you can eat for lunch or anytime you feel like it. Banana Que is a staple! These fried skewered bananas with caramelized sugar is a party in the mouth.
Finally, the last of the list, adobo. What is adobo, really? Meat marinated in a special mixture (soy sauce, vinegar, and spices) for a few hours or overnight, simmered in the same marinade and then browned in oil before serving. This dish is served with boiled potatoes or boiled banana, or both if you prefer. 😉
